More Phishmaps

  • The entire show from Hampton Coliseum, October 20, 2013. The second song in set 2, "Tweezer," is the centerpiece of the poster.

  • Phishmaps reflect Hamad's impression of what he hears in a jam at a specific moment. As an example, this image and the following one are maps of the same version of "Tweezer" from November 2, 1994. The artistic style and specific notated elements differ greatly.

  • The same version of "Tweezer" as the previous image, November 2, 1994.

  • “Ghost,” December 31, 2010, Madison Square Garden, New York City. Image reflects fans’ affective bond to spiritual, shared ecstatic peak. Known as “Holy Ghost.”

  • Hamad began to integrate color as an important aesthetic and affective element in later maps, such as this one of "46 Days" from August 3, 2003.

  • “Tube,” December 7, 1997, Ervin J. Nutter Center, Dayton, OH. Aphoristic song lyrics incorporated into map appeal to insider knowledge among fans.

  • Early maps (such as the Hampton "Tweezer") were done in one take, while listening to the music as it happened, and reflect the spontaneous, improvisatory nature of the maps. Later maps, such as this one of "Tweezer"->"Prince Caspian" from August 22, 2015, are more consciously planned. Hamad frequently stops, re-listens to segments, and predetermines many more elements.
